Appadurai has served as consultant and advisor to a number of multilateral and civil society institutions including the World Bank, UNESCO and SPARC (Society for the Promotion of Area Resource Centres). He has also founded and directed other organizational initiatives such as PUKAR (Partners for Urban Knowledge, Action and Research), the Interdisciplinary Network on Globalization (ING) and the journal, Public Culture (see Projects and Networks). SPARC: Society for the Promotion of Area Resource Centres is an innovative NGO based in India, and is the focus of Appadurai's ongoing research on urban issues and grassroots activism. http://www.indianngos.com/sparc/
