Appadurai has served as consultant and advisor to a number of multilateral and civil society institutions including the World Bank, UNESCO and SPARC (Society for the Promotion of Area Resource Centres). He has also founded and directed other organizational initiatives such as PUKAR (Partners for Urban Knowledge, Action and Research), the Interdisciplinary Network on Globalization (ING) and the journal, Public Culture (see Projects and Networks).


SPARC: Society for the Promotion of Area Resource Centres is an innovative NGO based in India, and is the focus of Appadurai's ongoing research on urban issues and grassroots activism.

World Bank: The World Bank Group is a development bank which provides loans, policy advice, technical assistance and knowledge sharing services to low and middle income countries to reduce poverty. Appadurai has participated in numerous World Bank conferences on globalization and poverty, and has also contributed essays to World Bank publications treating similar issues.

UNESCO: The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization works as a laboratory of ideas and a standard-setter to forge universal agreements on emerging ethical issues. Appadurai frequently delivers lectures and participates in the Organization’s other events.
